We have all heard about the nursing shortage, right? SO, why is it that newly graduated nurses are having a difficult time finding a job during the COVID-19 pandemic? After doing some research, I found some answers.

The entire healthcare system has been disrupted and new grad nurses are caught in the crossfire. While some land that first job as a nurse fairly quickly, others are applying to over 50 jobs to get a handful of callbacks. Frustration and helplessness are some emotions that those left behind are experiencing with no end in sight. Many institutions are facing financial hardships due to a lack of elective surgeries. With COVID-19 cases taking over all available services, there is no room for elective procedures and existing nurses are forced to cross-train to other specialties to keep their job.
So, what can you do as a new grad nurse?
There are some institutions that are in dire need of nurses and take need grads. Consider starting at a nursing home, assisted living facilities, and home health. Even if they are not your top choice, it may be the experience you need to give your nursing career a kick start. Good luck!
